14 Jul The Gap Life Diaries: A Prologue
So, I should probably explain what’s going on.
The story began over a year ago… (You should be imagining some twinkly music right about now)
As you may or may not know, in April 2011 I essentially closed my eyes and pointed at a map of Italy. A few weeks later, I found myself in Genoa, a city chosen almost at random and for little more than its coastal location. It quickly became my favourite city in the whole wide world.
I spent several months there getting some much-needed work experience – that I loved – and living, working, and socializing with some incredibly fun individuals.
Unfortunately, my dream life was interrupted by a little thing called ‘education’. A couple of days before the first term of my fourth year of university began, having already dragged out my stay in Liguria for a couple of months longer than initially planned, I said some very tearful goodbyes and made my way back to the cold, wet North East of England to get back to the nasty business of finishing my degree.
As you can probably imagine, I spent the entire academic year in a state of Post Italy Blues. For 9 months, I daydreamed about gelato, pizza, and the cracking tan I managed to achieve during the summer of 2k11.
Around Christmas time, as I was asked, “So, which jobs are you applying for?” and “Are you going to London too, then?” for the trillionth time, I finally decided enough was enough. I started telling people I was moving to Italy and having a Gap Life (y’know, all the fun of a gap year, but without the time limit).
After a lot of thought, I decided not to go back to Genoa. I have friends in Genoa, I know my way around, I love the place to bits, and I like a challenge. I felt like I needed to make my life a little bit more difficult in order for it to be a proper adventure.
I went on to think much less about where I would go, consulted trusty Wikipedia, decided for a still unknown reason that Turin looked pretty super, and booked a flight.
And so, the Gap Life Diaries – a record of my Italian adventures-to-be – was born.
